The "LEGENDS" :Part One

Louisville Legends

One of the great things about commuting by bike is you get a chance to see things you overlook or take for granted while driving.  Like a lot of you I live in a city (Louisville, KY.) which has so much to offer if you just slow down and look.

Some of my bicycle commute routes to and from work takes me past some of the most historical places in Louisville, KY.  One of my Bike To Work routes through downtown Louisville takes me past several buildings and structures where Louisville pays a pictorial homage to some Louisvillians and Kentuckians who have made contributions to the city, the state, the nation and the world.  Some of these people are widely know while others are lesser known figures to the masses.  This blog will highlight the widely known while hopefully bringing these lesser known "Louisville Legends" from obscurity.

These pictures are in most cases three to eight stories high and have been placed on large buildings and structures throughout Louisville,KY.  Most of these pictures are in or near downtown Louisville.

Baseball season has now ended and we have crowned a new World Series Champion The San Fransisco Giants.  This Louisville Legend has something to do with this years World Series. AS a matter of match he has had a lot to do with many many many many World Series.  He is Mr. Louisville Slugger, John Andrew "Bud" Hillerich.  Hillerich and Bradsby has been providing baseball bats to the major leagues for years. More than half of today's major league players use a Louisville Slugger Bat.  All due to this man who had a vision,

This Legend is known all over the world from his famous finger licking good chicken. What more needs to be said.

Harlen Sanders

This Louisville Legend hails from the world of professional boxing. Before there was  "Sugar" Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberta Duran, this promising welterweight's life was cut short while trying to rescue a friend on a fishing trip from the torrid currents of the Ohio River near the Falls of the Ohio.  Rudell Stitch, who some thought was on his way to becoming the World Welterweight champion was a strong swimmer who a couple of years prior to his death had saved a person from the waters of the Ohio River.

The next Louisville Legend is from the legal profession.  In this age of Internet breaches of personal information and cable television programs where the left and the right are at each others throats; this man has been called the defender of freedom of speech and your rights to privacy. Former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis was widely known as the "People's Lawyer".  He helped create the Federal Reserve System and his ideas helped establish the Federal Trade Commission.

A former student of  the Wizard  of Westwood, Denny Crum came to Louisville in 1971 with the hopes of bringing a NCAA basketball championship to the University of Louisville.  It took a few years for him to get the right mix of players to win that NCAA championship.   That team was led by a player who promised he would  bring a championship to the school before he graduated.  And in 1980, Darrell Griffith came through on his promise.  Denny Crum went on to win another championship in 1986. He is the winningest basketball coach in University of Louisville history. Additionally he was inducted in Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994.  And who was the person that presented him at that induction ceremony, his professor: “The Wizard of Westwood”  John Wooten.

These are just a few of the things I see on my Bike to Work.
